English applications in an international context
Writing applications in a language other than your mother tongue and for a different cultural context can be a daunting task. This talk will discuss the components of written application documents for an English-speaking context, and offer an overview of the documents expected. Application forms are frequently expected for graduate entry positions, and students will be offered hints on approaching typical application form questions. CVs or résumés in English are somewhat different from their German counterparts, and the differences both in terms of form and of content will be explained, with a focus on so-called “transferable skills”. Finally, cover letters will be touched on, briefly considering formal aspects (forms of address, salutations etc) and the main points of content.
